02.09.2009 Winton Train departed on time
The train set out on a symbolic journey from Prague to London at 9:01 a.m., on Tuesday 1st September 2009. This train departure was the climax of the project called Winton Train – Inspiration by Goodness. The train departure was preceded by a ceremonial event with the unveiling of Nicholas Winton’s statue.
01.09.2009 Main works Šatov - Znojmo completed
The railway station in Znojmo has been fully completed within the construction Electrification of the railway section incl. related track improvement Šatov – Znojmo. Also, a technically challenging but successfully implemented reconstruction of the Znojemský viaduct over the valley of the Dyje river has been completed. The investor of the construction, which is valued at CZK 1,231 billion, is the Railway Infrastructure Administration, state organization.
26.08.2009 The Winton Train Project
In 1939, Sir Nicholas Winton saved 669 children mostly of Jewish descent by evacuating them by train to the safety of foster homes abroad. Unfortunately, on 1st September 1939 Hitler invaded Poland, the borders were closed and the biggest transport which was due to evacuate other 250 children never left. 70 years have passed since these troubled events. Sir Winton will celebrate his 100th birthday this year. On this occasion Czech Railways will dispatch a vintage train on 1st September 2009. One of the main partners of this project is also the Railway Infrastructure Administration, state organization.
