ČD strengthening the transport service during the Biathlon World Championship in Nové Město na Moravě
From 7 to 17 February the Biathlon World Championship will take place in Nové Město na Moravě. The organizers expect high attendance; a significant number of visitors will be heading for the competition and the trains. In cooperation with the organizers, Czech Railways will dispatch new passenger trains at weekends; on the contest days there will be more scheduled trains between Žďár nad Sázavou, Nové Město na Moravě and Tišnov. At weekends the carrier will also increase the number of selected passenger trains from Havlíčkův Brod and back as well as of fast trains between Prague and Brno stopping in Žďár nad Sázavou. One of the shortest access routes to the race-ground runs from train stop Nové Město na Moravě.
„During the World Championship, the transport will be provided by connected three-car units Regionova, or possibly by other capacity units at selected times between Žďár nad Sázavou and Nové Město na Moravě. At weekdays passenger trains will run every hour during the rush hour and every 2 hours at weekends. Furthermore, on Saturday 9 and 16 February and on Sunday 10 February there will be auxiliary trains at 07:40 pm from Žďár nad Sázavou and at 08:06 pm from Nové Město na Moravě. Czech Railways also plans to increase the number of trains continuing to Tišnov or the weekend passenger trains from Havlíčkův Brod and back,“ says Lenka Horáková, Director of Passenger Transport Regional Centre ČD in Jihlava. The transportation on train will be preferred by people travelling from distant areas, which is why there will be more selected weekend fast trains running from Brno and Prague via Havlíčkův Brod stopping in Žďár nad Sázavou.
Czech Railways together with Railway Infrastructure Administration made preparations for this significant sports event in advance. By the end of 2011 Czech Railways had fully reconstructed passenger buildings in Žďár nad Sázavou and Nové Město na Moravě. Czech Railways invested almost CZK 40 million in the Ždár building and CZK 6.3 million in the Nové Město building. Both stations are now a dignified gateway and will offer visitors a pleasing to the eye area.
The Railway Infrastructure Administration has invested almost CZK 120 million in the Žďár Region. The biggest volume of funds has been spent on Žďár nad Sázavou. The objective of the investments is to achieve better comfort at stations as well as higher safety of railway traffic. In Žďár nad Sázavou passengers can benefit from a new underpass, three lifts, new staircases leading to reconstructed platforms, new lighting and new information boards in the hall, the underpass and on platforms. The connecting track section to Nové Město na Moravě has been modernized as well, the local train stop has been equipped with a new platform with a barrier-free access and a station announcement system and two level crossings have been equipped with better protection devices. The track facility in station Nové Město na Moravě has undergone reconstruction as well.
