Travelling by train in the line section Liberec – Harrachov will be considerably faster

09.12.2015

Liberec, 9 December 2015 – Today, the Railway Infrastructure Administration festively completed three constructions of the single-track regional line leading from Liberec through Tanvald, Desná and Kořenov up to Harrachov: a reconstruction of the line section Liberec – Tanvald and the Harrachov tunnel and establishing the Harrachov overtaking station.

Reconstruction of the line Liberec – Tanvald – Harrachov was quite necessary for further development of this region, therefore extensive construction works were under way here since last year already. I believe that passengers will forgive us temporary discomfort because the result is really worth it. While travelling by train on this route took previously 70 minutes, now it takes less than one hour“, said Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration.

Passengers will also appreciate higher comfort during their stay at railway stations and stops. Track adaptations on the line having as objective to increase speed and smoothness of trainsets’ rides required also a construction of new platforms and central crossings at Vesec u Liberce, Jablonec nad Nisou and Smržovka a Tanvald railway stations and at Jablonec nad Nisou, Jablonecké Paseky and Lučany nad Nisou railway stops. Besides new platforms and roofing for passengers, access pathways and ramps including lighting were built as well. The project also included a reconstruction of the railway superstructure and substructure; tunnel constructions and rock set-off surfaces underwent considerable adaptations as well. Construction works affected also railway crossings, in some cases new safety equipment was installed.

The project also improved operational parameters of the line Liberec - Tanvald. New safety and signalling equipment cables were laid on the whole line section. Operation will be now controlled by a remote traffic control centre at Liberec railway station. Smoother railway transport during inter months will be assured by the installation of switches’ electrical heating.

The content of the second construction is eliminating unsatisfactory parameters of the Harrachov tunnel, adjoining walls at portals and rock outcrops which were completely covered by ice during winter months due to which structural gauge on the line was narrower. For this reason, line speed was considerably lowered in this line section. The project also included a reconstruction of the adjacent bridge, the so-called Jizera viaduct. Builders installed new bridge bearers and strengthened its steel parts so that they correspond to an expected speed increase up to 55 km/h.

The Harrachov overtaking station was established on the line leading from Liberec through Tanvald to the Polish railway station Szklarska Poręba Górna within the third construction. Modernisation of the Harrachov operating point included a partial exchange of the railway superstructure and at the same time improving parameters of the railway substructure. Switches with a resetting point operating mechanism are equipped with electric heating due to the geographic position of 740 metres above sea level. The current manipulation dead end track No 3 was replaced by a passing track with the same marking where builders constructed an external platform 110 metres long with atypical wooden roofing for passengers. The current platform at Track No 1 underwent reconstruction as well, the orientation system was renewed and lighting was adapted. Access to trains is barrier-free.
