Festive ending of the Lubahn Project Czech part implementation

Liberec, 27 November 2013 – Passengers on the trans-border railway line from Liberec to Zittau and Rybniště with a branching from Varnsdorf to Seifhennersdorf could already notice several improvements due to the implementation of the Czech-German Lubahn Project. On the Czech territory, the project included reconstruction of Platform No 5 in Liberec Station and construction of a new stop Varnsdorf Old Station. The main project partner is ZVON from Saxony (Transport Association Upper Lusatia – Lower Silesia), the other partners are the Railway Infrastructure Administration (SŽDC) and the Liberec Region

The project is co-financed by the European Union by means of the Programme Ziel 3 for supporting trans-border cooperation 2007–2013 between the Czech Republic and the Free State of Saxony. Adaptation in the regions Liberec and Ústi and Labem cost 24.3 Mio CZK. They were carried out by the company Chládek a Tintěra, Pardubice a.s.  

On the Czech territory, infrastructure was adapted in two railway stations. In Liberec, the island-type Platform No 5 has been reconstructed including platform roofing. Railway superstructure has been repaired on adjoining station tracks No 107 and 111, works included also sanitation of the railway substructure, dewatering the substructure body, roofing the platform and increasing bearing capacity of the current underpasses’ arches. Besides that, safety, communication and heavy-current networks and equipment have been realigned. Increasing the platform edge to a standard height of  550 mm above the top of rail required an adaptation of the passenger elevator and extending the stairs in exits from underpasses. At the same time, the unused shelter of Czech Railways on the southern end of the platform was demolished during the construction and non-functional service elevators were dismantled.

Construction also took place also in the old Varnsdorf railway station where a new stop has been opened on 18 October already. It consists of an external level platform 45 m long with a boarding edge 550 mm above the top of adjoining rail. Railway superstructure and substructure has been  reconstructed on the platform site and dewatering of Track No 4 was built. Besides that, the current crossing in km 12.141 was closed and a new railway crossing in km 12.288 as well as an adjoining path for pedestrians was built in its place. The new platform acquired lighting, moreover a part of rail premises was fenced.

On the German side, reconstruction of Platform No 3 in Mittelherwigsdorf station on the line section between Zittau and Varnsdorf was carried within the Lubahn project.
