Modernisation of railway crossings in Frýdek-Místek region has been launched
Ostravice (Frýdek-Místek District), 8 October 2014 – Today, the Railway Infrastructure Administration festively launched the modernisation of fifteen railway crossings on the line between Frýdlant nad Ostravicí and Ostravice. This project with costs amounting almost up to 180 Mio CZK will increase railway operation safety in this line section and will bring more comfort to passengers. The project should be completed in February next year already.
The project is based on priorities of the Operational Programme Transport having as objective to improve railway transport outside the Trans-European Network with the intent to increase safety on railway crossings and equipment reliability, decrease the human factor impact and centralise signalling installations. Another asset is improving smooth railway and road transport in this section.
“Our primary objective on the line between Frýdlant and Ostravice is therefore increasing passengers’ safety. Thanks to this project, it will be also possible to increase running speed up to 80 km/h and speed for crossing road vehicles up to 50 km/h, “said Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration about details of the project.
The project consists of the construction and reconstruction of fifteen light signalling installations on level crossings where the regional line between Frýdlant nad Ostravicí and Ostravice crosses roads of various categories. A part of the project is also renewing crossing pavement and adapting the corresponding railway superstructure and substructure.
"We will have installed Czech signalling equipment Type PZZ-RE on the crossings on the grounds that functionality of all crossings will be controlled remotely from a single site, more specifically from Frýdlant nad Ostravicí Station," said Mr. Zdeněk Chrdle, Director General of AŽD Praha about the project technical details.
The construction designated as Railway crossings on the line Frýdlant nad Ostravicí - Ostravice will cost 179.578,611 CZK. It will be co-financed by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport amounting up to 126.687,858 CZK, equalling 85% from the construction’s eligible costs. The remaining financial sum from national resources will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. Completion of the works is planned for February next year.
The Railway Infrastructure Administration invests every year hundreds of millions Czech crowns into safety increase of railway crossings. It was currently possible to acquire two billion Czech crowns for their modernisation from the European Union. These resources, provided by the Operational Programme Transport, will allow completely modernising approximately 400 railway crossings on the whole territory of the Czech Republic up to the end of 2015. At the end of last year already, a pilot project called “Railway crossings in the line section Rumburk – Dolní Poustevna” took place.
The Railway Infrastructure Administration manages in total 8,041 railway crossings in the Czech Republic. It has always been striving for safety increase on all railway crossings. Besides investments into technical improvement of the crossings, these efforts also concentrate on their further adaptations. Therefore, big investments will be focusing on building new and safer grade separation crossings instead of level railway crossings.
”We must be aware that even the best safety installation is of no avail if pedestrians and car drivers do not respect valid laws and basic safety regulations Construction measures must therefore go as one with prevention as well as appropriate repression which may correct often irresponsible and irregular behaviour of people who do not observe valid laws and regulations. It is alarming indeed that 99% of accidents on railway crossings are caused by passing motorcar drivers, “ ads Mr. Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration.
