The Railway Infrastructure Administration reconstructed a bridge over the river Ohře on the line Chomutov – Cheb
Vojkovice nad Ohří, 18 March 2015 – The Railway Infrastructure Administration finished a complex reconstruction of the railway bridge near Ostrov in Karlovy Vary Region on the line Chomutov – Cheb. A festive completion of the construction took place on Wednesday 18 March in the premises of Vojkovice nad Ohří railway station. The construction has as objective to preserve operation on a double-track line with a required line category, track clearance and line speed.
”The effect of this construction will show not only in operation savings. Traffic safety is going to increase as well and trains will be able to cross the river Ohře in this section with higher speed than up to now. Therefore it will also bring increased comfort for passengers,“ says Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration.
The project concerned the bearing structure under Track No 2 and partially also the foundation, the reconstruction of which will allow the bridge to bear increased traffic load safely. At the same time, the foundation’ shape has been adapted to match the new construction.
During the construction, builders dismantled the original bridge and replaced it by a new welded construction with three fields100 metres long. The bridge abutments and pillars were strengthened by jet grouting. Following that, a closed trackbed was built on the reconstructed bridge. The project also included exchanging the railway superstructure on the bridge and on the immediate bridge approach and reconstructing the track geometry (directional and height track levelling, adjusting superelevation and the transition curve).
The project starts from the global objective of the Operational programme Transport - Priority Axis 1 to improve railway transport on the Trans-European railway network. The double-track electrified line Chomutov – Cheb is an important route of the railway network in the Czech Republic and part of the railway line connecting the cities Ústí nad Labem and Cheb.
Total costs of the project called Reconstruction of the bridge in km 160.319 on the line Chomutov – Cheb amount to 72.622,952 CZK (VAT excluded), the investor being the Railway Infrastructure Administration, state organisation. The project was co-financed by the European Union under the Operational Programme Transport from the Cohesion Fund, the contribution amounting to 49.727,517 CZK. National financing of the project was assured by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The construction supplier was an association of builders led by the Strabag company.
