Lines in the vicinity of Prague and railway line from Kolín to Brno covered by GSM-R signal

01.12.2015

Prague, 1 December 2015 – The Railway Infrastructure Administration introduced the GSM-R digital radio system on the lines Praha – Králův Dvůr, Praha – Benešov a Praha – Lysá nad Labem as well as on the bypass route of Czech Rail Transit Corridor I in the line section Kolín – Havlíčkův Brod – Křižanov – Brno. A festive completion of both constructions took place today at the Prague seat of the Railway Infrastructure Administration, Dlážděná Street.

Construction of the GSM-R network plays a key role mainly for operation reasons; passengers will however benefit from its assets as well. Railway operation will get not only simpler but also faster, especially as far as international transport is concerned“, said Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration.

GSM-R (Global System for Mobile Communications – Railway) is an international standard of wireless communication designed for railway applications. The projects covered lines mentioned above by a GSM-R signal in quality corresponding to the EIRENE (European Integrated Railway Radio Enhanced Network) international standard. This will enable to use the safety system ETCS Level 2 in the future.

The main content of the project designated as GSM-R node Praha (Beroun – Praha – Benešov) is the construction of base stations which ensure spreading the GSM-R signal on 120 km of lines mentioned above and a connection between the network user and its central connecting system.

The project designated as GSM-R Kolín – Havlíčkův Brod – Křižanov – Brno will ensure signal coverage for the main line through the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands which serves as a backup railway connection between Czech Rail Transit Corridor I and II.

Both projects start from the global objective of the Operational Programme Transport Priority Axis 1 which is an improvement of railway transport on the Trans-European Network (TEN-T). The investor will achieve this objective by operation simplification and speeding. Construction works for both projects were launched in March last year and will be completed this December.

Total investment costs of the construction designated as GSM-R node Praha (Beroun – Praha – Benešov) amount up to 369,196,676 CZK (VAT excluded). The project is co-financed by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport. The rate of EU co-financing amounts up to 298,454,999 CZK. National financing is assured by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.

Total investment costs of the project designated as GSM-R Kolín – Havlíčkův Brod – Křižanov – Brno amount up to 671,798,297 CZK (VAT excluded). The project is co-financed by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport. The rate of EU co-financing amounts up to 523,270,106 CZK. National financing is assured by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure.
