Modernization of the railway Tábor – Sudoměřice u Tábora was launched

June 25th 2013 – Modernization of the railway track between Tábor a Sudoměřice u Tábora has experienced opening ceremony today. This currently single-track section is part of the 4th transit railway corridor from the Děčín state border through Prague, Benešov, and Tábor to České Budějovice and Horní Dvořiště state border. Total construction length is 11.389 km.

Execution of the project will bring a double-track railway in the section Tábor – Sudoměřice u Tábora, reconstruction of the railway station Chotoviny and redevelopment of the station Sudoměřice u Tábora to a railway stop. The railway station Chotoviny will experience changes mainly in relation to passengers; it will be supplemented with island and outer platforms with flyover entries and modern shelters for passengers. In the new railway stop Sudoměřice u Tábora, new outer platforms will be developed. They will be accessibly through a new underground passage for passengers, stairways and footpaths. The new information system will also contribute to improvement in the quality of services for passengers.

In the section Chotoviny – Sudoměřice u Tábora, a new railway track will be conducted on relocation due to unsatisfactory directional parameters of the existing track. Am elevated crossing with the new highway D3 and the primary road I/3 is designed on this new track. A level crossing will remain on roads of lower category with low traffic only - Čekanice, Chotoviny and Sudoměřice u Tábora, as well as on the country lane at Stoklasná Lhota. Dissected topography on the new railway relocation will be overcome by railway flyover with a length of 456 metres and also a new double-track Sudoměřice tunnel with a length of 430 metres. It is historically the first railway tunnel in the South Bohemian Region.

Double tracking of the current single-track railway will bring more than double capacity and significant shortening of travelling times. “After completion of the entire corridor, the journey from Prague to Tábor should for example take just 63 minutes, and passengers will get from Prague to České Budějovice in 92 minutes,“ says Petr Šlegr, Deputy Director General for Railway Modernization from the Railway Infrastructure Administration (Správa železniční dopravní cesty). The project also provides for safety of railway operation.

The station Chotoviny and related track sections will be equipped with modern safety equipment which eliminates the possibility of human error, makes the operators’ job easier and enables economical and operative operation control from the traffic controller station. “Installation of new electronic safety equipment provided with signalling with positive white light will bring increased safety of road traffic on railway crossings,“ adds Deputy Director General Petr Šlegr, the assistant manager.

The general contractor of the project, based on a public tender is the company OHL ŽS, a.s., the anticipated completion term of the construction is April 15th 2016. The tender price of the construction amounts to CZK 1,437,242,363 without VAT. The project is designed for co-financing by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund within the Operating Programme Transport, up to 75.54 % of eligible expenses. The maximum approved financial contribution of the EU for this project is CZK 1,882,033,936. National resources were provided by the State Fund of Transport Infrastructure (SFDI).
