Double-track operation launched as part of the Modernization of the line Votice – Benešov u Prahy

Benešov u Prahy, 3 December 2012 – the launch of the double-track operation is a significant event. This track section runs in a completely new and straighter path. After the completion of the construction project in 2013 it will be possible to use the speed of up to 160km per hour in this section. The modernized section is part of IV Railway Transit Corridor: Děčín state border - Prague – Benešov – Tábor – Veselí n. Lužnicí – České Budějovice – Horní Dvořiště state border. The investor is the Railway Infrastructure Administration, state organization.

Five new double-track railway tunnels were built as part of the implemented line relocations - Votický (590 m), Olbramovický (480 m), Zahradnický (1044 m), Tomický I (324 m) and Tomický II (252 m). It was the tunnel implementation that allowed straightening the new route, thus markedly increasing the speed parameters. The construction offers passengers a higher quality of the infrastructure as well. The modernized railway stations and train stops are equipped with new platforms with a grade-separated access, together with a modern information system, station announcement system, shelters and other factors increasing the comfort of passengers.

Let´s highlight the key events related to the progress of this construction that commenced in 2009. In 2010 the track section of Bystřice u Benešova – Benešov u Prahy was modernized and made double-track. In 2011 railway station Votice was reconstructed; here two new outside platforms with a grade-separated access, station canopy and passenger shelters including a modern information system were built. The line relocation in the open line section of Votice – Olbramovice with new double-track tunnels Votický and Olbramovický was put into operation. Towards the end of the year the odd set of tracks including a new connection to the branch line in the direction of Sedlčany was put into operation.

By putting the even set of track into operation, the reconstruction of railway station Olbramovice was completed this year. The passenger building was modernized and necessary technological buildings were constructed. Passengers can use two new island platforms. In August operation was terminated on the current line in the track section of Olbramovice – Bystřice u Benešova and on 29 August 2012 single-track operation was launched in the route through Zahradnický Tunnel and both Tomický Tunnels, including train stops Tomice and Bystřice u Benešova. On 30 November 2012 the second open line track including the platforms in train stops Tomice and Bystřice u Benešova near this track was put into operation. As a result of the cancellation of railway station Bystřice u Benešova and passing point Tomice, the original three single-track open line sections were replaced with one double-track section running from Benešov u Prahy to Olbramovice.

In 2013 completion work will proceed on renovated sections as well as the landscaping of the abandoned sections of the original route. After introducing the planned line speed (up to 160 km per hour) it will still be necessary to perform the so-called quick pantograph test. After this successful testing by means of a special track-guided vehicle, the designed line speed will be introduced.

The contractor of the construction became the „Association VoBen“ following a public tender. The chief member of the association is Eurovia CS a.s.; other members are Subterra a.s and Viamont DSP a.s. National funds are granted by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure (SFDI). The construction project is co-funded as part of the Operational Programme Transport from the Cohesion Fund of the European Union. The maximum amount of the approved contribution from the Cohesion Fund is CZK 4,081,436,955. The application for subsidy was approved by the European Union in April 2012.
