New traction substation in Albrechtice ends twenty-year provisional arrangement


Albrechtice (at Český Těšín), 18 September 2014 – Today, the Railway Infrastructure Administration festively started the construction of a new traction substation in Albrechtice. The new substation has a crucial importance for maintaining railway transport on the important connecting route between Opava and Český Těšín without any change to the current extent and continuousness of railway transport.




The traction substation converts electrical power from the distribution network to parameters necessary for supplying the overhead contact line on neighbouring railway lines. The Albrechtice station is connected to a 22 kV high voltage distribution system. The substation will convert this electrical power to 3 kV direct current which is a value characterising the railway power supply system in the whole Northern part of the Czech Republic.

The system has been using a mobile traction substation for 20 years already; however its technology is almost obsolete now and functions only thanks to intense maintenance. Without the construction’s implementation, a situation could occur when the line could not be operated with electrical traction anymore.

”This railway line is heavily used, especially for freight transport. The current equipment does not meet environment protection, safety and especially dimensions and installed output requirements anymore. The new traction substation will ensure a reliable power supply ad finish the provisional arrangement which lasted for twenty years .Moreover it will increase operational safety because in case of emergency it will also enable partially supplying with power railway lines not connected directly to the substation. It will thus ensure continuous railway operation on the backbone networks of supra-national importance, “ said Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration.

The new substation’s premises will be built near the current installation. It will be a fenced ground-floor building with new cables, telecommunication equipment and electrical fire alarm and safety signalling.

The traction substation construction in Albrechtice will cost 181.480,547 CZK.  It is co-financed by the EU Cohesion Fund within the Operational Programme Transport with the maximum EU contribution amounting to 109.115,486 CZK. The remaining financial means from national resources will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. Construction works started in spring already and should be completed in October next year.
