The project “Modernization of the railway Ševětín – Veselí nad Lužnicí – Part II, Section Horusice – Veselí nad Lužnicí” was launched


June 26th 2013 – Modernization of the next section of the 4th transit railway corridor from the Děčín state border through Prague, Benešov, and Tábor to České Budějovice and Horní Dvořiště state border was launched today. It is a section Horusice – Veselí nad Lužnicí, total construction length is 4.964 km. Modernization of the railway will bring double-track of the currently single-track railway, it will double transport capacity and thanks to increased speed up to 160 km/h it will shorten running times of trains. The construction project also includes redevelopment of the railway station and railway stop in Veselí nad Lužnicí.



In the section between the stop and station in Veselí nad Lužnicí, the by-pass is designed in a new route due to limiting directional parameters. It will be directed through the flood plain of Lužnice and Nežárky rivers, therefore the track will be placed in this section on a 3 to 5 meter high bank with new bridges on both rivers, including the cut-off meander. There will be several new inundation bridges developed on the by-pass to secure drainage conditions within the area. Track crossing with roads No II/147 and III/00352, and local road at the stop in Veselí nad Lužnicí will be dealt with by development of new road bridges. The abandoned railroad body will be subsequently used by the municipality of Veselí nad Lužnicí as a cycle path.

The railway station Veselí nad Lužnicí will undergo a significant change that will be appreciated mainly by passengers. The station will be supplemented with 2 new covered island platforms, another outer platform will be situated at the station building. Passenger access will be provided through a new underground passage with the exit to the station building and the area in front of the railway station. Self-serve elevators will be available for persons with limited moving ability. A new information system will be naturally installed as well.

The railways stop Veselí nad Lužnicí will also change beyond recognition. After cancellation of the current level crossing, new outer platforms will be built here. Access to them will be provided with a new underpass with stairs and ramps. Platforms will be supplemented with shelters for passengers.

To eliminate noise from railway operation, noise barriers will be constructed in a part of the residential area. Their material and colour design will be adapted to local conditions to a maximum extent possible.

The project does not omit safety of train operation or provision of reliable operation. The railway station and related track sections will be provided with modern safety equipment with electronic interlocks which eliminates the possibility of human error, makes the operators’ job easier and enables economical and operative operation control from the traffic controller station. Due to double-track upgrade of the section with relocation and changed configuration of the set of tracks of the railway station, the tractions line will be reconstructed within the entire construction project. Technological equipment of the power substation in Veselí nad Lužnicí will be replaced with a new one, compliant with increased operation and ecological requirements.

The general contractor of the project, based on a public tender, is the company EUROVIA CS, a.s.; the anticipated term of completion is January 15th 2016. The tender price of the construction amounts to CZK 1,283,029,132 without VAT.

Total cost of the project including VAT is CZK 2,718,829,040. The project is designed for co-financing from the Cohesion Fund within the Operating Program Transportation. Maximum EU’s contribution will be CZK 1,237,000,803, which is 71.20% of eligible expenses. National resources were provided by the State Fund of Transport Infrastructure (SFDI).
