Liberec – Tanvald railway line will be faster and safer


Jablonec nad Nisou, 29 October 2014 – Adaptation of tracks on almost 28 kilometres, construction of new platforms and safety and signalling equipment modernisation – all of this is included in the reconstruction of the Liberec – Tanvald railway line which was festively launched today by the Railway Infrastructure Administration in Jablonec nad Nisou. 




 ”The Liberec - Tanvald line is already 120 years old, but even now trains carry hundreds of passengers there every day. Reconstruction of this line section is therefore quite necessary for further development of the whole region. It will have as result especially faster and safer travelling between Liberec and Tanvald. This will allow i.a. a thirty-minute interval between trains as required,“ explains Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration.

Passengers will also appreciate better comfort while moving in railway stations and stops. Track repairs on the line will require construction of new platforms in railway stations Vesec u Liberce, Jablonec nad Nisou, Smržovka and Tanvald. Passengers will also feel more comfortable in stops at Jablonec nad Nisou, Jablonecké Paseky and Lučany nad Nisou where central crossings and access walkways will also be built.

An important part of the construction is also strengthening factors of safety on the line. Railway crossings affected by construction works on superstructure and substructure are going to be reconstructed. New safety equipment will be installed by builders on other crossings.

Reconstruction will also improve operational characteristics of the line between Liberec and Tanvald. New safety and signalling technology cables are going to be laid along the whole line section. Operation will be controlled remotely by a traffic control centre at Liberec railway station. Continuous transport will be assured during winter months by installing electrical heating of switches.

The project implementation was complicated by concurrent or related constructions that had to be mutually coordinated. Moreover, a time schedule collision occurred with extra-railway investments of the local administration, e.g. modernisation of the Liberec – Jablonec nad Nisou tram line or reconstruction of several roads. For this reason, the schedule of the Liberec - Tanvald railway line reconstruction has been separated into two parts. The majority of construction works should be carried out by builders still this year, the rest will be finished during next year.

The construction called Reconstruction of the Liberec - Tanvald railway line will cost 876.218,916 CZK. It is being co-financed by the European Union from the Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport in an amount of 650.801,236 CZK, i.e. 80.01% of eligible costs. The remaining financial means from national resources will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. All works are to be completed in September 2015.
