Trains will ride faster on the modernised part of the line from Havlíčkův Brod to Brno


Žďár nad Sázavou, 10 November 2014 – The Railway Infrastructure Administration festively launched today the reconstruction of tracks in the line section Sklené nad Oslavou – Ostrov nad Oslavou which is a part of the heavily used railway line between Havlíčkův Brod and Brno. The main asset of the construction is a speed increase up to 120 km/h for classical train-sets and up to 140 km/h for tilting trains.




The railway line between Havlíčkův Brod and Brno has been in use since 1898. However, in 1953 a new line was finished and in 1966 it was electrified. At that time its period of importance started as it took over the majority of passenger and freight transport between Prague and Brno. During the 90s, even EuroCity trains were riding there.

The core of a complex reconstruction and modernisation of the double-track line section Sklené nad Oslavou – Ostrov nad Oslavou consists of exchanging the railway superstructure and substructure including drainage and renewal of the catenary. The railway stop Laštovičky will undergo a great change; builders will construct an elevated platform there, repair access walkways and install new in-house equipment, a system for orientation, lighting and station radio.   

”The line crossing Vysočina Region was really in need of such an important investment, the current shape of this line section did not meet current requirements anymore and necessitated frequent repairs. The reconstruction will result in more comfortable, faster and safer travelling by train. Moreover, the line will meet higher quality requirements for the purposes of operating international transport,“ explained Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of the Railway Infrastructure Administration.

Within the scope of the project, builders will also reconstruct the frameworks, stabilise bridges and repair culverts used for conducting water under the embankment. Another part of the construction is complete modernisation of safety equipment on the line including signalling components. A new low-voltage distribution system will be also installed in a necessary extent. New prefabricated air-conditioned relay houses will be built in railway stations Sklené nad Oslavou and Ostrov nad Oslavou for positioning safety equipment on the line.

Total construction costs will amount almost up to one billion CZK. The construction is co-financed by the European Union from its Cohesion Fund under the Operational Programme Transport up to a maximum amount of 713.896,572 CZK which equals 77,79% of eligible costs. The remaining financial means from national resources will be provided by the State Fund for Transport Infrastructure. The completion of works is planned for October next year.
