Another Construction of the Railway Junction Plzeň Begins. Even Bridges over Mikulášská Street Will Be Repaired.


The next stage of modernization of the Plzeň main station was ceremonially launched today by a gesture of tapping on a railway track with the participation of representatives of the main investor Správa železniční dopravní cesty (SŽDC), of the co-investor the statutory city of Plzeň and of representatives of the Plzeň Region and others. The goal of the launched construction is rebuilding the junction to a state that corresponds to its importance and the current requirements for competitive rail services.


Modernization of the junction Plzeň, which is a part of Czech Rail Transit Corridor III, was divided into several separate parts. The construction Junction Plzeň, 2nd construction - Rebuilding of Passenger Station Including the Bridges Mikulášská follows two previous events. Within the construction Passage through the Junction Plzeň in the Direction of Czech Rail Transit Corridor III, the railway line has been modernized between the main station and the station Plzeň-Jižní předměstí (Southern Suburb) which was also reconstructed. Modernization of the eastern part of the Plzeň main station, especially of Platform No 1, 2, 4 and partly also Platform No 3 was a part of the subsequent construction Junction Plzeň 1st construction – Reconstruction of the Prague Gridiron.

The launching construction will bring completion of Platform No 3 and complete modernization of Platform No 5 and 6 and of the bridges over Mikulášská Street. A consortium of companies Metrostav and OHL ŽS also has to solve the reconstruction of track branching in the direction of Cheb and related parts of southern rails. In the area of the current marshalling yard there will be stabling tracks, which will allow cleaning and filling of passenger trainsets. Reconstruction of the area of Mikulášská Street and an area in front of the station will be an important part of the project. The statutory city of Plzeň is the investor of reconstruction of a tram line and the area in front of the station.

Reconstruction of signalling and communication equipment is also a part of this phase. This together integrates a passenger information system, diagnostic equipment, fire alarms, CCTV systems and particularly transmission systems for remote control operation.

“The railway junction Plzeň is located in the city centre of a dense civil and industrial area, complex transportation networks and between two rivers. I believe that the people of Plzeň and visitors to the West Bohemian city outlast less than two years of traffic restrictions and welcome better service not only on rail. Due to the general reconstruction of two bridges over Mikulášská Street, which will be recessed together with tram tracks, there will also be an improvement in public and individual transport”, stated Mr. Pavel Surý, Director General of SŽDC.

“The goal of the initiated construction is increasing the maximum transit speed by the Plzeň Junction up to 80 km/h. It will also simplify access and ensure passenger comfort as all the platforms and access to them will be equipped with elevators allowing movement of persons with reduced mobility and orientation“, said Mr. Milan Veselský, Commercial Director of Metrostav.

The project called Junction Plzeň, 2nd construction - Rebuilding of Passenger Station Including the Bridges Mikulášská is co-financed from the EU programme Connecting Europe Facility. The total cost of the project amounts to CZK 1,351,994,773. EU aid intensity is 71.63% of eligible costs. The amount of the grant amounts to € 29,980,680.63 at maximum, i.e. approximately CZK 839,459,000.
